On only having just about finished reading Shantaram I am way behind on the comments of 2006. But I have been intrigued on hearing that Johnny Depp is to play GDR.After what I have been reading JD, despite the wonderful actor he is, is so far removed from what I've been reading of GDR's size, aggression and whole personna. It just doesn't fit no matter how much they manipulate the storyline.I suppose the only people who it won't phase are the vast majority of people who haven't read the book, so in one way it's a moot point.
Viewer demograhics and all that. For me Russell Crowe would be good but he's too visual in our minds eye these days. Almost like the character is playing Russell Crowe instead of the other way round. For me if you wanted someone who looks similar,is big and pretty rugged,a top interpretive actor and could do the accent in a second I reckon Liam Neesom would be ideal.Of course Box Office always has a lot to do with casting decisions, but it'll be great to see how it comes out

I was told of the book and subsequent film starring Johnny Depp by an Australian I met in a Burger Bar in Barcelona, Spain (2007) whilst I was traveling around Europe.
Unfortunately he cpuld not remember the name of the Book!!!! It wasn't until this week, some 3 months later that I met another Australian in a Youth Hostal in Nottingham,England. I spoke of my intrigue in this film starring Johnny Depp and hey PRESTO!!! the name of the book and film is SHANTARAM, brilliant, fantastic, at last!!. So I immediately got onto the internet and there it all is!. So today I am off to the library to track down a copy. I shall be looking forward to the Film and sequel to the book, Any News on this at all?? Please feel free to email me noel3003@hotmail.com THANKS. Noel Kennedy.

i unlike most of you i do believe that johnny depp would be that perfect man to play mr.roberts he is not a pretty boy like someone here said that is the one thing he works on NOT being. he is a wonderful actor and i know that he will do a wonderful job even though i do agree that if they really made the whole movie it would be like what a 10 hour movie i would still watch it though. but im just saying and as for the sequel where is it im dying here

No way: I reckon Johnny Depp would be good so long as they unprettify him. Russell is too much of a show pony these days. Plus we all know Russell can't handle himself in a scrap in real life so I could not watch the movie depicting all the beatings etc and know that the guy playing him is not a hard man - not saying Russell's not a good actor, or good bloke - just a bit soft. If Iggy Pop was younger than he is these days - he'd have been perfect; you know that sinewy taut lean body that can take heavy drugs and general thrashings with a bit of mystery.

I believe Shantaram can be transformed into an epic, classic movie....however I agree with most when I say that, however brilliantly talented Johnny Depp is, Russell Crowe would be the perfect Shantaram. GDR had a real streetfighter spirit in him which I don't think JD may really be able to embody....anyway, we'll just have to wait and see.

Fanastic story. A book i'll be sure to revisit and rediscover over and over again. One of the few books that i insist that others close to me read so that the experience can be shared.

I pray the movie is true to the nature of the book: a long, sprawling journey through all the things that make us human. I admire Johnny Depp for his extroadinary talent and hope he does the character justice but can't help that think he lacks the 'toughness' to pull it off. Russel Crowe however seemed to fit the profile perfectly..

I also agree totally. There is no way the movie can capture what was in the book, but I am still looking forward to seeing it when it comes out.

However, I just can't picture Johnny Depp as Shantaram.

One of the most interesting fiction/novels I have read
in many years, and I read about one book per week.
It's the first book purchase I have ever made AFTER
reading the library copy. I had to own a copy so that I could lend it to friends.
