This is so wrong for the lead. I think Johnny Depp is one of the most talently actors in Hollywood, but he is way toooooo wrong for the character. You can not play down his pretty boy presence. Please reconsider and give the novel its fair due.

Shantaram is without doubt the best book that I have ever read. When I heard that it was to be made into a movie, my first reaction was that Johnny Depp would make the perfect Lin. I can’t wait to see this film!!!!

This is one of the most incredible stories I have ever read and those producing this movie have a tremendous responsibility to do justice to the book and to portray India and the people of India with the reality that Gregory David Roberts wrote in his book. I saw the characters and Leopold’s in my mind so vividly from his descriptions and was absolutely shocked when I saw the real place on U-Tube – exactly as he described. The movie must be made in India. Secondly, I just adore Johnny Depp and he is a very talented actor, but the role of Lin should go to Russell Crowe – he is Australian, like Gregory and his physique in the Gladiator is similar to Roberts in real life. Good luck with it – get started, for heaven’s sake and those involved must do so with the same dedication and determination that Shantaram has.

I see I may be a bit late with comments but I agree with Martha. I adore Johnny Depp and see alla of his movies, even several times but I think someone like Jame Mcavoy would really be better for the part. And I think the book should be a trilogy of movies. Part I Comes to India up to where he lives in the slum, Part II his gangstr life Part III Afganistan to end. Isn’t is too much for one movie?

James McAvoy is only 5′-7″ tall – same as Johnny Depp.
Russell Crowe is 5′-11″ – much better for the role.
He just needs to be in shape – like he was for the Gladiator.

Liam Neeson is the perfect person to play Shantaram – he’s huge and has the looks! Why didn’t I think of this before?

I think Leonardo dicaprio would be better cast to play the role of Lin. Leo would certainly need to bulk for the role. My fear is that Depp could ruin it with his often misplaced and exaggerated eccentricity. If it absolutely has to be Depp, the director must to careful to display the colourful characters with equal air and not allow Depp to run away with it with his often self centred performance. He is a great actor but he has ruined many a good movie with his abberation.

I can’t wait to see the movie, cause the novel is so amazing and interesting, it gives me an opportunity to know India and the life for the ordinary people living there
